SD Schools Back To Normal After KS Fugitive Arrest

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

Schools in the South Dakota city of Huron have returned to normal operations after the capture of an escaped jail inmate.

The school district had put its buildings on lockdown Tuesday as a precaution after 45-year-old Charles Beeney escaped from the Beadle County Jail by using a makeshift weapon to hold a guard hostage. Beeney was captured Tuesday night in Sioux Falls.

Huron Schools Superintendent Terry Nebelsick told KOKK radio after the arrest that schools would return to normal operations Wednesday.

Beeney has a criminal history in Kansas and North Dakota, including a jail escape in North Dakota seven years ago. Beadle County Sheriff Doug Solem said Beeney was being brought back to Huron Wednesday and would be confined there while prosecutors decide on charges.
