Burglars are watching you and waiting for just the right time to break in and steal your valuables.
There’s been a spike in home break-ins in southeast Wichita. A majority of the burglaries are happening during the day when most people are at work. Burglars are kicking in side garage doors and taking what they want.
Nancy Price is watching. It’s her area that’s been hit hard by daytime burglaries.
"Last week it was his house, that house two times in a month,” she said.
There have been 35 home burglaries since December 1st between I-135 and Oliver and Kellogg south to Pawnee.
Police say the burglars are waiting for you to leave for work. They kick in a back or side garage door.
"Only three-quarter-inch long with a good kick even with the deadbolt engaged it will break,” said Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte.
Nolte says with a small investment, you can secure your home. A faceplate for the deadbolt will help.
“It’s got longer screws,” he said. “Take longer to get the door open.”
Price bought some big dogs for protection, but she’s tired of the crime. She’s putting her house of for sale and moving out.
“They've gone into the garage, gone into the back, constant, all the time,” she said.
