The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man posing as a police officer cashed a forged payroll check at a Eureka business.
Authorities say a man claiming to be a deputy sheriff from Adams County, Kan., which does not exist, entered the business on Monday, claimed to be Deputy Brian Moore and cashed the false check.
It was determined the impersonator is Robert Wayne Helms of Pittsburg, Kan. Helms is listed as an absconder by the Kansas Department of Corrections, with past convictions for forgery, theft, and kidnapping. He has contacted law enforcement and stated he is on the run.
The incident in Eureka appears to be related to similar incidents reported in Belle Plaine and Lyons. Helms has attempted to cash checks at over twenty different locations in Kansas, some successfully and some not.
Helms should be considered armed and dangerous. Anybody with information about Helms is asked to call their local police immediately or to contact the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME.
