Body Found In Ditch Ruled Homicide; Man Arrested

UPDATE: Monday, October 1, 2012

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in connection to the death of a woman, whose body was found in a ditch Sunday morning.

Deputies responded around 10:15 a.m. Sunday after a passing motorist reported seeing a body in a ditch in the 2100 block of West 55th Street South, near Campus High School.

The body has since been identified as 38-year-old Amber L. Kostner.

Investigators later determined her death to be homicide and on Sunday evening, they arrested 41-year-old Anson R. Bernhardt of Wichita. He is currently being held at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility facing a First Degree Murder charge.

Kostner had blunt force trauma to parts of her body and deputies have collected evidence from at least two different crime scenes.

Investigators said Kostner and Bernhardt were romantically involved and had been living together since late spring. No motive has been revealed, but a preliminary investigation indicates there may have been an argument just before Kostner's death.

The case will be presented to the district attorney's office for formal charging later this week.

Court documents show Bernhardt has a pending aggravated battery case against him. He is accused of attacking a man with a pocket knife. He posted bond in July on the condition he attend an anger and alcohol program.

In those documents he listed Amber Kostner as his girlfriend. He also listed three children.

He cited his place of work as a telecommunications company at 155 S. Lulu in Wichita.
