An animal control officer trying to retrieve pets from a California home where the resident had been evicted has been shot to death.
Sacramento County authorities say officer Roy Marcum, of Elk Grove, and a bank official went to the home Wednesday in Galt, about 20 miles south of Sacramento.
The homeowner, 65-year-old Joseph Francis Corey, had been evicted a day earlier, and the home was supposed to be empty.
But a sheriff's sergeant says Corey opened fire, striking and killing Marcum. Corey then barricaded himself inside the house.
He was arrested on suspicion of homicide after an all-night standoff.
