Wichita police arrested 31 people for drunk driving over the weekend. That number is nearly double than what police would see on a normal weekend.
Lt. Doug Nolte said 7 of the drivers arrested are repeat offenders and 3 drivers were behind the wheel with an open container. A 24-year-old man slammed into an unmarked police car. A detective was stopped at a red light when the accident happened. The driver of that car was arrested on DUI charges.
Police are now concerned about the upcoming holiday weekend. They are warning everyone to get a designated driver or have other plans to get home, rather than getting behind the wheel after drinking.
So far this year, Wichita has had 16 fatality accidents, 5 of those are alcohol related.
