DOUGLASS, Kan. -- A 75-year-old woman is found dead after a fire caused her home to collapse.
Fire crews responded to the fire in the 18000 block of Santa Fe Lake Road in Butler County at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning. When they arrived, they found the structure had collapsed. Firefighters said only one wall was standing.
Butler County Fire District #3 Chief James Woydziak said, "the fire had such a head start that it just totally consumed , it was a manufactured home, and it totally consumed everything about the floor."
Crews saw a car in the driveway, indicating that someone may have been home at the time of the fire. After the flames were brought under control, a person tentatively identified as Lydia Cox, 75, was discovered in the rubble.
The home was a total loss and the vehicle parked in the driveway was damaged by the heat. The home was not insured and a dollar estimate was not available. A fire investigator said the fire apparently started in the kitchen, but a cause has not yet been determined.
Chief Woydziak said, "there's all kinds of things that could happen in a kitchen and we don't know which of that yet. The largest amount of damage or the deepest char of damage was in the kitchen area."
