Two northwest Kansas teachers are gaining some Internet notoriety after posting a spoof video that pokes fun at the new federal school lunch health guidelines.
The Sharon Springs teachers remade the song "We Are Young" by the band Fun - changing the title phrase phrase to "We Are Hungry" in a video they posted on YouTube. The teachers say they made the video after receiving complaints from students about the food they now receive in their school lunches.
The video shows students stuffing their lockers with junk food and athletes fainting during practice from lack of food. A graphic on the video urges viewers to contact the White House and the United States Department of Agriculture to share concerns with the new meal guidelines.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is designed to help children eat healthier by providing them with school meals based on the latest nutrition research. The new meals offer children both fruits and vegetables every day of the week, whole grain-rich foods, fat-free or low-fat milk, limited calories based on age and reduced levels of unhealthy fats and sodium.
