A fire that resulted in the evacuation of several Salina apartment residents has been ruled arson.

The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in the 500 block of East Crawford.

The complex was evacuated, and firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control.

Investigators later determined the fire was intentionally set, and police arrested a man in his 40s. The investigation is ongoing.

The Red Cross says 15 residents were displaced.

An apartment complex in Salina was evacuated after a report of heavy smoke Wednesday evening.

Firefighters responded to the 500 block of East Crawford Street just after 7:30 p.m.

Saline County Dispatch says heavy smoke was found coming from a basement hallway of the building. Residents were evacuated.

Crews located the fire and quickly got it under control, but smoke continued to fill the complex.

No injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist displaced residents.
