LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Lawrence police have confirmed that a body found on Monday is that of a 23-year-old University of Kansas student from Peru.
The body of Gianfranco Villagomez-Saldana, of Lima, Peru, was found outside a Lawrence home, near where he was last seen Saturday morning.
Police say investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine his cause of death but they do not currently suspect foul play.
University officials released a statement Tuesday offering condolences to Villagomez-Saldana's family and friends. He earned a bachelor's degree in industrial design in May and was working on a master's degree in engineering.
The Kansas City Star reports a relative of Villagomez-Saldana arrived at Kansas City International Airport Monday.
Lawrence Police Officers are currently seeking information on the whereabouts of a University of Kansas student last seen early Saturday morning in central Lawrence.
Gianfranco Villagomez-Saldana was last seen walking from a home near 9th and Michigan Street, towards his destination near 11th and Mississippi Street. Villagomez, a 23 year old University of Kansas graduate student from Peru, was reported missing by friends at approximately 7pm Saturday evening.
Friends advise it is extremely out of character for Villagomez to be out of touch with friends or to not return to his apartment.
Villagomez is described as being approximately 5’8” tall, weighing 165 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and glasses. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt with a KU Jayhawk logo on it, a long sleeve gray shirt, a black jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes. A photograph of Villagomez is attached to this release.
