A police officer in Augusta has been arrested, accused of child sex crimes.
On Tuesday, Augusta Public Safety Officer Jerry Ballinger was arrested on two counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child.
He has been an officer in Augusta since 1997.
According to Augusta Department of Public Safety Chief Tyler Brewer, the arrest was the result of an internal investigation initiated by their office weeks ago.
Further details were not released, but the alleged crimes happened in Butler county between April and July of 2013. The Butler County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
The Butler County Sheriff's Office declined to comment Friday saying the case has been handed over the Butler County Attorney. The County Attorney's office would only comment on information of public record.
Ballinger made his first court appearance Wednesday, and has since bonded out of jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 19.
