19-year-old Alton Franklin made his first appearance Monday in the McPherson County Courthouse on the amended complaint against him – a complaint which reads now he's accused of aiding and abetting second degree murder in the death of 26 year old Brandon Brown."

Two small Kansas college campuses are now dealing with a tragedy. Tabor College is dealing with the death of Brown, a father of 2 who came to Tabor to finish his education and play football. McPherson College, a campus of 600 students in the same conference with Tabor, has a student body trying to come to grips with how one of their students is accused in the beating death of Brown.

Alton Franklin is now officially suspended since being charged.

Police were called to a duplex near the McPherson College campus the week before and found Brown severely beaten.

McPherson College President Michael Schneider called students together Monday to encourage them.

"We're going to keep going on,” Schneider says. “We're going to keep performing. We're going to keep singing. We're going to keep playing and we're going to go to class."

And the students expressed their perspective on this tragedy.

"Even if you don't know the person personally, there's always a friend who does,” says Elizabeth Loeffler, a sophomore at the college. “You have to be there for them and experience it with them and just be there for the people. Just give a lot of hugs."

"And because of one disagreement there's one student who could very well go to prison for the rest of his life and another student and father of two who's gone," says McPherson College senior Cody Taylor.

And with the more serious complaint of second-degree murder, Franklin is now being held on a half-million-dollar bond.

Tabor College has scheduled a memorial service for Brown on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. It will be at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Point. The public is invited to attend.

Charges have been amended in the death of 26-year-old Brandon Brown, a football player at Tabor College.

Monday, McPherson County Attorney David Page amended charges against 19-year-old Alton Franklin from aggravated battery to aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

Franklin made a first appearance in court on that charge Monday morning.

McPherson Police are still investigating and ask that anyone with information to call the department at (620) 245-1200 or McPherson County Crime Stoppers at (620) 241-1122.

Brown died Saturday night from injuries he sustained in a beating last weekend in McPherson. Franklin, of Dallas, Texas, was arrested earlier that same day.

Brown, from Southern California, had moved to Hillsboro only six weeks prior.

A public memorial service is being put together by the Tabor college student body to be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hillsboro MB Church, 300 Prairie Pointe in Hillsboro.
