Four people are dead following a crash on I-70 in Ellsworth County.

The accident happened just after 9:30 this morning in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 219. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a large SUV slammed into the back of a semi tractor trailer that was parked on the shoulder. The SUV caught fire.

Troopers say a nearby homeowner pulled a child from the SUV to safety. The child was taken to the hospital in Salina before being transferred to a Wichita hospital.

Troopers said the extent of the damage from the wreck and fire made it difficult to determine how many people were inside the SUV.

The semi was disabled, with its hazard signs out.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for nearly four hours. Traffic is moving again, but traffic is slow moving both directions.
