Marion County authorities are trash talking, saying they’re fed up with people dumping trash in creeks and ditches, and with road signs being stolen.

Authorities are tired of people dumping their trash, even leaving their trashcans in a creek bed north of Hillsboro. They’re tired enough they want to catch them and make examples out of them.

It’s an issue that probably any of Kansas’ 105 counties can relate to: trash being put simply where it doesn’t belong.

"Trash being dumped in the ditches; couches, chairs, refrigerators, freezers, large tires.” Said Randy Crawford, Marion County roads and bridges superintendent.

Marion County covers about 900 square miles. That includes some 1,600 miles of roads. It’s too much territory for the eyes of the law to be everywhere, and that’s evidently why uncaring people figure they can get away with trashing.

"It's very annoying,” said Marion County farmer Cody Penner. “It makes everything look bad around here. It makes it look like we don't even take care of our own stuff."

And while some use signs for target practice, others are walking off with the signs, even pulling up the posts. The concern is what danger this can lead to for drivers.

"If they're not familiar with the county, they're not going to stop,” said Marion County Commissioner Dan Holub. “I mean, that's a hazard of the lethal sense."

Commissioner Holub says the county attorney is ready to throw the book at the first person arrested to make the point that they mean business.

"And we do have a reward of $500 leading to the arrest,” he said.

If you know who's trashing up Marion County creeks and stealing road signs, Marion County authorities would like to hear from you. You might be in line for a reward.
