GARDEN CITY, Kan. — A man is in custody after a disturbance involving a machete.
Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Garden City police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Shamrock Street on an aggravated battery call. Police say a a suspect had forced his way into the residence of a woman he had once been involved with, and made threats while wielding a machete.
A brief struggle ensued between the suspect and two people. One of the victims suffered two cuts to her neck from the machete.
When officers arrived, the suspect had already fled on a motorcycle. The woman who was hurt was taken by ambulance to an area hospital and has since been treated and released.
A short time later, Finney County sheriff's deputies spotted the suspect driving erratically on Sagebrush Road. The suspect refused to pull over, and a chase began.
He was pursued back into Garden City, where other officers joined. It ended in the 700 block of West Santa Fe when the suspect came to a dead end. He tried to make a slow speed U-turn, but ended up hitting the front end of a Garden City police cruiser and laid the bike down.
He was not injured and taken into custody. Xavier Gonzalez, 33, was booked on multiple charges, including aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated endangering a child, aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property, fleeing and eluding and interference with a law enforcement officer.
