Kansas City's downtown area could soon see street cars. A special election was held Tuesday for residents of the downtown area to approve a new sales tax to fund the street car system.
The measure passed by 64%.
Kansas City had street car service as far back as 1869 when the cars were pulled by horse teams. Electric cars eventually replaced them.
There were over 25 street car lines in Kansas City until service ended in 1957.
Supporters of the proposed line say it will provide much-needed transportation options for residents of downtown Kansas City and boost economic development.
