An investigation is underway after a Reno County Jail inmate died Sunday night.

According to Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson, 54-year-old James Richard Shumpert was found unresponsive in his cell shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies immediately started CPR until an ambulance arrived. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a Hutchinson hospital.

Shumpert was alone in his cell, on a bunk when he was found. Sheriff Henderson said it appears he died of natural causes, per a preliminary investigation, and that he had a history of medical problems.

Shumpert was in jail facing drug charges, and he had served prison time in the past for assault and drug convictions.

The KBI has been called to investigate, which is standard procedure when a person dies while in custody.
