Hutchinson Police are warning residents of door-to-door salesmen illegally selling magazines and books.

Police have received about 15 complaints since Monday about a company called ECR Corporations with employees who are selling books and magazines.

A resident, near the area of the Prairie Dunes Golf Course, bought a book from the salesmen over the weekend and her check was cashed within 24 hours. The resident alerted police and her product has yet to arrive.

Detective Curtis Black said the company has dozens of negative reports, that include scams, through the Better Business Bureau.

"This is not unusual. Fact is, as long as I can remember, we deal with peddlers year end and year out. Usually picks up in the to spring to summer time," said Black.

Black believes the salesmen have since left Hutchinson but are staying in the Wichita area and may be going to Newton next.

The company did no apply for a Peddler's Permit, which is required by city ordinance. Non-profit or school related fundraisers who go door-to-door are exempt from this ordinance.

If these individuals come to your residence, call 9-1-1.
