The city of Hutchinson will officially be known as "Smallville," as in the hometown of Superman; at least for one day.
The guys behind the “Hutchinson, KS should be named 'Smallville'” Facebook page are convinced Smallville is based on Hutchinson.
They've scoured comic books, tv-shows, movies, and say they've come up with a list of similarities. They say both towns have about the same population. They are the same distance from Salina, and are both located on the Arkansas River.
For the last year, they've campaigned online and around town to officially change the city's name from Hutchinson to Smallville.
"We love our hometown and we think the world should come visit us,” Christopher Wietrick said.
All their hard work led up to one city council meeting Tuesday morning. At eight A.M. Chris Wietrick pled his case.
"My reaction was why are they serious? Who are these people?” Hutchinson Mayor Bob Bush said.
But Mayor Bob Bush says Chris's enthusiasm won over the entire council. The motion was passed unamiously.
"That's one of the things we on the city council do is not just to do all the business of city but also when and where we can, take ideas people have and breathe life into them,” Mayor Bush said.
"This is what we wanted and now we think the whole world will recognize our town as Smallville, Kansas,” Wietrick said.
So, by order of the city of Hutchinson, this June 21st Smallville, Kansas will exist.
The reason they chose June 21st is because Superman will be inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame that same day in Topeka .
