With news of the bankruptcy of Hostess, shoppers are headed to a bakery outlet in south Wichita, lining up inside, filling up their carts with as much product as they can knowing that it could be the last time they could shop there.

"It's a mad house," said shopper Nancy Call. "The shelves are empty."

The Hostess Bakery Outlet has catered to its regular customers for decades, but the handful of store employees likely have never seen a day like Friday.

"(It's) chaos," Call said. "They don't have enough people helping them and the shelves are almost empty already. People are buying huge amounts of the stuff."

Full carts wheeled outside cleared the shelves. A long line of shoppers inside stocked up for the last time.

"Everybody (is) fighting to get stuff before the shelves are completely empty," said shopper Robert Young.

Hostess has 570 outlet thrift stores nationwide. Customers say they pay much less at the outlets than at supermarkets. That's why the closure is causing such a mad rush.

"There are no Twinkies," said shopper Charolette Phillips. "The Ho-Hos are gone."

The same can be said for the Bakery Outlet in El Dorado as customers who patronized the store for many years realize Friday was probably their last chance to stock up.

Cheyenne Thomas loaded two carts full.

"I heard they were going out of business and I have a large family and I need to feed them and it's quite cheap," she said.

She and other customers say they freeze much of it for later use.

"The bread's almost gone and people are loading up their baskets to overflowing and we're going to miss this store in this town," said shopper Beverly Sommerville.

The Bakery Outlet stores are scheduled to be closed on Monday, but as fast as product was selling Friday, there might not be much left then.
