A corrections officer was injured Friday when he fell within a tower at an area prison.

At about 10:35 a.m. the officer fell within Tower 1 at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Butler County, a jail spokesman said. That tower oversees the prison's main entry gate for vehicles.

Someone at the gate tried to radio the officer to open the gate. When he did not respond, the jail's control center tried to make contact by radio and by phone. When the control center also failed to reach him, the jail's response team was called in to check on him.

A jail spokesman says the response team found the officer had fallen inside the tower from the top level to the second level.

Butler County Emergency Rescue, the El Dorado Fire Department, and EMS responded, the spokesman said.

The officer was conscious and talking with first responders before being taken to Wichita's Wesley Medical Center, the spokesman said.

How and why the officer fell are currently under investigation.
