Four Fort Riley Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan

The Department of Defense today announced the deaths of two Fort Riley soldiers in Afghanistan, bringing the death toll from the base this month to four.

Sgt. Channing B. Hicks, 24, of Greer, South Carolina, and Spc. Joseph A. Richardson, 23, of Booneville, Arkansas, died Friday in Paktika province, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

On Monday, Sgt. Matthew H. Stiltz of Spokane, Washington died when his unit was attacked by insurgents in Zerok, Afghanistan. All three were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division of Fort Riley.

Capt. James D. Nehl of Gardiner, Oregon died last week in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan when his unit was attacked. He had been assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division of Fort Riley.
