A 1-cent sales tax increase to pay for Andover's new city hall is expiring 15 months early.

Jennifer McCausland the city's assistant superintendent, tells me that the citywide tax will be retired on Oct. 1, well ahead of the Dec. 31, 2014, sunset that was originally planned.

She says through August more than $4.6 million has been collected from the sales tax increase, which was enacted in 2010.

The money was used to construct a new, 27,000-square-foot city hall building, which opened in January 2011.
