Inmate Chauncey Howard was apprehended by the Wichita Police Department on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Walmart store located at 29th and Rock Road in Wichita, Kansas.

His capture was made possible by the collaborative efforts of a number of law enforcement agencies, including the Wichita Police Department, KDOC institutional and field services staff, and U. S. Marshals.

Inmate Howard had been transferred from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) on October 6, 2009 to face pending criminal charges in Sedgwick County. These charges were dismissed and on November 20, 2009 Howard was mistakenly released from the Sedgwick County jail rather than being returned to HCF.

On December 1, 2009 Howard contacted the KDOC by phone regarding personal property that remained at HCF and money that he believed was due him as a result of his being released from custody. He was advised that he still owed time on his previous sentence and was ordered to immediately surrender to authorities. He then allegedly terminated contact and was not heard from again until his capture on Sunday.

Inmate Howard was turned over to KDOC Special Agents from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility who transported him to the prison in Hutchinson. He has been placed into administrative segregation and faces charges through the KDOC inmate disciplinary process.

Information regarding inmate Howard’s alleged refusal to surrender to authorities after being informed that he had time remaining to be served will be presented to prosecuting authorities for consideration of additional criminal charges in District Court.
