WICHITA, Kan.-- Wichita Police arrest a 23-year-old woman after drivers report seeing her asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle with four children in the backseat on Friday night.

"There's a female slumped over on the turning lane, westbound Pawnee to go southbound on Washington. She does have children in the car with her," said a police dispatcher via scanner traffic.

Officers received multiple calls from citizens about a woman asleep behind the wheel of the vehicle. The kids were found a few hours later at another relatives' home in the 1600 block of W. Webster. The kids were unharmed.

Officers learned that the suspect had taken the four girls, ages 2, 3, 8, and 14, without their parents' permission.

The group was together at a family gathering earlier that evening. The children's parents advised officers that the suspect was extremely intoxicated when she left with the children.

When police went to take the woman into custody, she resisted arrest. She was booked for a drivers license violation, disorderly conduct fighting, and criminal damage for kicking out the window of a police car.

The Exploited and Missing Children's Unit is now investigating this case.
