An elderly Kansas couple is dead after their car ran a stop sign and collided with another car in rural Leavenworth County.

The Kansas City Star reports 84-year-old Bernard Payeur and 77-year-old Joanne Payeur died in the crash around 7:15 p.m. Saturday west of Leavenworth.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office says the Denison residents were westbound when they ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle driven by 39-year-old Rebecca Gildner of Easton.

The Sheriff's Office says the Payeurs didn't appear to be wearing seatbelts. Bernard Payeur was found dead at the scene, and his wife died shortly after rescuers arrived.
Gildner and two passengers were taken to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries.
