UPDATE: Friday, April 26, 2013

No one was hurt after a KC-135 tanker made an emergency landing Friday afternoon at Mid-Continent Airport.

Airport spokeswoman Valerie Wise says the tanker had taken off earlier from McConnell Air Force Base and was doing maneuvers when one of its four engines had to be shut down.

An airport emergency was declared with both airport and Wichita emergency crews responding.

The tanker, fully loaded with fuel, landed without incident, and none of the five people aboard were hurt.

Wise says the reason it landed at Mid-Continent instead of the base is because McConnell’s instrument landing system was not working properly, which was needed due to low clouds.
