There are questions swirling over the evaluations received by hundreds of Spirit Aerosystems' employees. SPEEA, which represents approximately 3,000 Spirit employees, is claiming there were hundreds of errors made on those evaluations which resulted in lower scores for employees. SPEEA says the errors make the evaluations invalid.
Midwest Director of SPEEA Bob Brewer says the evaluations are part of the annual review of Spirit employees' work performance. The union says Spirit lowered nearly 1,000 SPEEA-represented employees' evaluations to match what the union calls "lackluster company and management performance."
"We've been told in some separate meetings that Spirit felt it was very difficult to explain high performance employees when the company wasn't performing well to their targets," said Brewer.
Brewer says Spirit managers made adjustments in the methodology used in employee evaluation ratings without first telling employees. He says those employees, unaware of the change, kept working as they had before only to discover a drop in their final evaluations.
"Management couldn't give them a substantial evidence based reason for why this was happening," said Brewer.
Company spokesman Ken Evans issued the following written statement:
"Spirit believes that the health of our company hinges on each of us performing at full capacity and productivity. We constantly try to give accurate feedback to our employees regarding their performance and will continue to do so. We will respond directly to the NLRB at the appropriate time."
SPEEA has filed a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board, saying the evaluations were unfair because they are used to determine raises, give promotions and terminate employees. The grievance filing is meant to force a meeting with the company to discuss the changes which the union says should have been negotiated. If no resolution is reached, SPEEA can file for arbitration using an independent arbitrator.
