An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper suffered serious injuries Friday evening after the plane he was piloting reportedly stalled and crashed just southeast of Oklahoma City.

It happened around 7 p.m. near Bethel Road and Highway 9 in Pottawatomie County. The OHP plane was initially called out to assist several agencies in their search for a man who wandered away from a crash and could have been injured and intoxicated, troopers said.

The pilot spotted the man in a wooded area, and after he signaled to fellow authorities on the ground, they heard the small Cessna aircraft stall before it went down nose first and burst into flames.

The pilot was found outside the plane and was pulled away from the flames. Troopers said he was able to communicate following the crash. He was flown to a hospital in Oklahoma City with serious injuries. His name and current condition were not released.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
