The public got its first look at some features of Wichita Mid-Continent Airport's new terminal project Tuesday, when the design for a new parking garage was unveiled.

Right now, travelers leaving their cars at Mid-Continent Airport while they are out of town have to park them outside, exposed to the Kansas elements. By the time a new terminal opens at the airport, they will have a few more options.

"We've had a lot of people asking for covered parking -- a garage -- for a long time," said Assistant Director of Airports Brad Christopher.

He told the Wichita City Council Tuesday that construction on a new four-level, 1,600-space parking garage should start less than a year from now. Christopher called the project long overdue.

"Any other airports our size around the country with few exceptions typically always have covered structure parking," he said.

While many travelers agree parking at Mid-Continent is already fairly convenient, they say covered parking will add conveniences year-round.

"You might not have to scrape the ice off when you come back," said Park City resident Bruce Dill

His wife, June, added, "I suppose long-term parking would be nice to have covered because of the hail possibilities in Kansas."

The $40 million parking project is entering the final design stages. Construction should begin in the spring or summer of 2013 and the project should be finished by late 2014. That will be just in time for a new $101.5 million terminal to open in 2015.

"We must have our parking facilities and our garage and rental car facilities open prior to our new terminal building," Christopher said.

He said the terminal project helped make the much-requested parking project a reality.

It's the first sign of the future at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport.

Wichita City Leaders got a first look at drawings for the soon-to-be constructed terminal.

The design team is asking for some guidance on the four-level parking garage, and whether to add a canopy to the walkway from the parking garage to the terminal.

Each level of the garage would have room for four-hundred parking spaces.
