Aerospace companies from around the country often come to Wichita, fishing in the talent pool for good aviation employees. But it seems like they've stepped it up since Boeing announced it'd be closing shop here.

Jim Enix is one of those former Boeing Wichita engineer who didn’t get an offer to transfer elsewhere with the company.

"I think I was with one of the first groups to go within this new layoff procedure,” he says.

Out of work since July, Enix takes great interest in a job fair like this. Eight companies participate in the Wichita Engineering, Aerospace and Aviation career fair at the Marriott near Kellogg and Webb Road Monday afternoon. As the job fair’s name implies, the greatest interest is finding engineers.

“Some people got offers to go to Oklahoma and I wasn't one of those," Enix says.

So he is shaking the job tree here, seeing what offer might fall his way.

"I've got a couple, not really offers, but a couple people interested,” he says. “Haven't got an offer yet, but hopefully that will change with this job fair."

He’s particularly interested in hearing about B/E Aerospace’s plans to open an engineering center in Wichita soon.

"I have your resume. I'm going to get some things in front of different hiring managers that I have that are looking to have positions in Wichita over the next two to three weeks, if not sooner,” says Jane Thompson, B/E Aerospace recruiter. “We're looking to make some decisions and move forward to the next stages."

It’s a start for the former 21-year Boeing engineer. Enix says he’s willing to move for the job if necessary. But if a company like B/E Aerospace offers one of the new local engineering jobs, that would be fine with him, he says.

A spokesman for B/E Aerospace says the company hasn't put a maximum on the number of people they'll hire for the engineering center here. But he says if they can recruit ten engineers at the job fair, they'd consider that a success.
