A local aviation company celebrated a new era as Bombardier Learjet broke ground on an expansion.

State and local leaders attended the ceremony Monday morning. The expansion will house the Learjet 85 program, as well as a flight testing center, paint and production, engineering, information technology and a new delivery center. It is the largest expansion in the company’s history.

The $52.7 million project will be complete by 2014.

Carl Brewer, Wichita mayor, said the facility will allow the Air Capital of the World to diversify its workforce.

“We will continue to work with these companies and move forward with new opportunities,” Brewer said.

Pat George, Kansas secretary of commerce, said the city expects to maintain its status as an aviation leader.

“We intend to keep that statement saying we are not falling behind,” George said.

Ralph Acs, Bombardier Learjet vice president and general manager, thanked Kansas leaders for their commitment to Learjet and the aviation industry.

By 2022, more than 1,000 jobs will have been created at Wichita's Learjet site.

Bombardier Aerospace continues to invest in both current production Learjet aircraft as well as innovative products such as the all-new Learjet 85 midsize jet. Launched on October 30, 2007, the Learjet 85 aircraft is on schedule for entry into service in 2013.
