The United States and China have agreed to sign a five-year agreement that will guide discussions on food security, food safety and sustainable agriculture.

The agreement was announced Thursday at the first US-China agriculture symposium in Des Moines by Chinese Vice President Xi
Jinping, China Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

The agreement will become the guiding document for high level discussion on agricultural policy and trade.

Vilsack says the agreement further strengthens the cooperation between the world's largest agricultural producers.

Chinese agriculture minister Han says the agreement provides key areas in which the two countries can broaden cooperation, promote
steady development of agriculture and increase farmer income.
