A new forecast for this year's wheat harvest is lower than recent years. It precicts a Kansas harvest of 313 - million bushels.

The Wheat Quality Council made those calculations based on 570 stops in Kansas wheat fields.

For comparison the Kansas wheat harvest averaged 349 million bushels each year from 2008 - 2012 based on USDA numbers.

Executive Vice President of the Wheat Quality Council, Ben Handcock says, "The farmers I talked to think that the drought is the biggest issue that they have. The freeze certainly didn't help any. The drought, they think, is the deciding factor."

Handcock says the last thing this crop needs is another freeze tonight. What it will need is continuing rain as the crop moves towards a later than normal harvest date, he says.
