The Kansas Star Equestrian Center is still more than two years away from opening at the Mulvane casino site, but organizers say they're already looking forward to the benefit it will bring to the state's horse industry.

Todd Gralla is Director of Equestrian Services for Populous, the architectural company designing the center. The Oklahoma family has participated in horse shows in Salina and the state fair in Hutchinson.

Gralla says the Kansas Quarter Horse Association currently holds two of its events in Tulsa because they haven't had a good venue of their own.

"For Kansas, this is excellent because it's a privately funded project, privately funded facility and we desperately need a good, modern equestrian venue in this state," said Gralla.

The building currently under construction on Interstate 35 near Mulvane will eventually become the Equestrian Center, but not for awhile. It will be used as a temporary casino for about a year while the main casino is built. Workers are currently prepping the building for that purpose.

Gralla says everything will be in place for the Equestrian Center by the spring of 2014. He anticipates about 23 horse events a year, many which will run over two to three days, as well as many other events.

"There'll be a multitude of entertainment events, concerts, boxing possibly. There could be trade shows on our arena floor because we do have two very large arenas to be built here," said Gralla.
