Fans of lesser known breeds of poultry are planning an event next week in Lindsborg.
The nonprofit American Livestock Breeds Conservancy will discuss a new definition for the term "heritage chickens" at the April 17 event. There also will be farm tours and a showcase of heritage chicken recipes.
An official with the group, Marjorie Bender, said that the goal is to assure that the term is not "incorrectly used by uninformed breeders or co-opted by unscrupulous marketers."
The group says that traditional or heritage breeds of poultry began to lose favor after World War II to modern crosses bred to meet production goals. The group hopes that defining the term "heritage chickens" will raise awareness about the older breeds and lead to their reintroduction in the marketplace.
