A powerful former warlord in Afghanistan has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, on a day when 16 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack in western Afghanistan.

The attacks come a day after Afghan President Hamid Karzai took the oath of office for a second term, amid escalating violence across the country.

The governor of Farah province says two children are among the dead in the suicide bombing, and several more are among the two dozen wounded.
