A U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist accused of helping al-Qaida and shooting at FBI agents may be forced to appear in a New York City court against her will.
A defense attorney says Aafia Siddiqui (ah-FEE'-ah see-DEE'-kee)
may have to appear by video or in person in Manhattan federal court
Monday. The hearing is to decide if Siddiqui is competent to stand
trial.
The 37-year-old MIT- and Brandeis University-trained specialist
in neuroscience was brought to the United States last summer after
her arrest in Afghanistan.
Prosecutors accuse her of being an al-Qaida operative and
shooting at U.S. soldiers and FBI agents.
Her attorneys say she's innocent.
Defense Attorney Dawn Cardi says the judge signed an order
permitting authorities to take her to court against her will.
