In this week's "Money Matters," if you've lost your job and are looking for a new career there are some professions that pay good salaries but do not require a college degree.
Michael Kling of investopedia.com has checked the Bureau of Labor Statistics latest data available from 2006 and found some gems. Some do require specialized schooling.
Here they are:
Air Traffic Controller: The median pay is $117,200 and you can retire at age 50 with 20 years of service or after 25 years at any age. It is a high stress job with 2 to 3 years of specialized training to become certified. But, there are a lot of openings coming up.
Real Estate Brokers and Sales Agents: The average salary is #39,760 but don't let that figure fool you. The highest 10% earned $111,500. While college is not necessary, new entrants must pass an exam to get a state license.
Advertising Sales Agent: The average salary is $47,750. Twenty percent have a high school degree or less and 10% have an Associates degree.
Funeral Director: The average salary is $49,620. College programs in mortuary science last from 2 to 4 years. You must serve a one year apprenticeship, pass an exam and obtain a license. Hours can be long and irregular, and it isn't everyone's cup of tea.
There are other jobs in law enforcement, physical therapy and other areas. Do your research. Remember, a college degree helps but it isn't always necessary to land a good job.
