Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and other local leaders officially kicked off a technology upgrade for Wichita AT&T customers.

The communication company launched its 4G LTE network for wireless customers. The upgrade improves Internet speeds for mobile and tablet users.

AT&T invested more than $775 million in its Kansas wireless and wireline networks from 2008 through 2011 with a focus on improving the company’s mobile Internet coverage and overall performance of its networks.

Steve Hahn, AT&T Kansas President, praised Brownback and Kansas lawmakers who have pressed for capital investment in Kansas.

“Expansion of high-speed mobile broadband access across the state of Kansas is like building a bridge to the future,” Brownback said. “It will help connect the best of what Kansas has to offer to economic opportunities across the globe.

Wichita is one of more than 50 metro markets nationwide that have launched AT&T’s 4G LTE technology.

Rival Verizon Wireless launched a 4G network in Wichita last year. The nation’s largest wireless company has upgraded 4G capabilities to 371 markets across the country.
