WICHITA, Kan.--- The Kansas Attorney General's office is reminding homeowners to make sure they hire a registered roofing contractor.
All roofers in Kansas are to comply with a new Kansas law requiring them to register with the Attorney General’s Office.
Legislators approved the Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Act in 2013. The law requires every contractor that charges for commercial or residential roofing to obtain a registration certificate from the attorney general's office.
The law took effect on July 1 of last year. Attorney General Derek Schmidt says that 700 roofers had registered as of Monday.
“As storm season begins across our state, it’s important for homeowners to make sure their roofer has registered before signing any contract, paying any money or having any work done," said Schmidt.
Before hiring a roofer, consumers should ask for a copy of the roofer’s registration certificate from the attorney general’s office and then go online to verify that the roofer is in fact listed in the attorney general’s online directory.
