General Motors and the United Auto Workers are fighting over plans to close 16 U.S. factories and import vehicles from other countries as a June 1 deadline for a concession deal draws near.

The union says in an e-mail to members that it expects talks to intensify this week. But it asks members to contact President Obama to protest.

GM says in documents submitted to Congress that it plans to start importing small cars from China starting in 2011.

The UAW says GM's plans will cost 21,000 U.S. factory jobs. GM says the percentage of cars made and sold in the U.S. will remain stable.
