Chrysler's bankruptcy put only a small dent in Wall Street's rally.

The Dow Jones industrial average is ending about 17 points lower. The index gave up early gains after President Barack Obama confirmed that Chrysler LLC will be going through bankruptcy.

The announcement was not surprising to investors, though, and stocks still capped the month of April with a strong gain.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow is finishing down 17.61 points, or 0.2%, at 8,168.12, after rallying 121 points in early trading.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 0.87, or 0.1%, at 872.77. The Nasdaq composite index is up 5.36, or 0.3%, at 1,717.30.
