Low Bids On Public Works Projects May Stretch Stimulus Dollars

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he expects money from the economic stimulus plan to go further than he thought. That's because bids for public works projects are coming in lower than projected.

LaHood made the comment after speaking with the Illinois congressional delegation. LaHood is a former Illinois congressman.

LaHood says there's a lot of demand for these kind of projects — and he says that has led contractors to make lower bids than expected.

As a result, he's predicting more jobs will be created than he had anticipated.
