Wingnuts Roll in Exhibition Win
The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 10-6 at the Bettis Family Sports Complex on Sunday night.
David Peralta had four hits, while John Rodriguez was 3 for 3 with two walks in his spring debut.
Wichita took control of the game early with a five-run bottom of the second against T-Bones' starter Nick Singleton. With one out, Peralta singled through the right side. Two batters later, Jake Kahaulelio reached on an error by shortstop Jose Duran. With first and third and two outs, Mike Conroy lined a single to center field to score Peralta and give Wichita the first run of the night. Ryan Khoury hit a deep flyball that bounced off the top of the right field wall before bouncing back into the outfield. The triple plated Kahaulelio and Conroy to make it 3-0. Jared McDonald capped off the rally with a two-run home run to right-center.
Josh Lowey started for the Wingnuts and pitched three shutout innings. Lowey allowed one hit, walked none, and struck out two. Lowey has now thrown six scoreless innings during the pre-season.
After the T-Bones scored their first run in the top of the fifth, Wichita answered right back with a three-spot against left-hander Logan Hoch. Singles from Peralta and Salomon Manriquez, plus a walk to Kahaulelio, allowed the Wingnuts to load the bases with no outs. Conroy walked to force home Wichita's sixth run. After Khoury was robbed by Duran on what turned into a line drive double play, Duran was charged with another error that scored Manriquez and allowed McDonald to reach first base. Rodriguez singled down the right field line to score Conroy, and the Wingnuts carried an 8-1 lead into the top of the sixth.
Brandon Jones and Lee Cruz picked up RBI singles for the T-Bones in the sixth, but Rodriguez answered back with a single through the right side that extended the lead to 9-3.
Kansas City scored three times in the top of the eighth, while the Wingnuts utilized an RBI groundout from Taylor Freeman in the bottom half for their final run.
Matt Nevarez and Josh Dew each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Luis Chirinos earned the win, allowing two earned runs in three innings of work.
The Wingnuts are now 4-0 this spring.
