Hijacked Horse Foils Would-Be Thief

Reporter: Associated Press

Thursday, May 10, 2012

It looks like the man who tried to hijack a downtown St. Louis sightseeing carriage didn't count on horse sense. Authorities say the crime on Tuesday was foiled when the horse pulling the carriage ran to its barn.

Now, 40-year-old Johnny Medina is charged with robbery, assault and animal abuse. He is jailed on $30,000 cash-only bond and does not yet have a listed attorney.

Carriage driver Larry Turner told police he was steering Harry the horse back to the stables when Medina rushed the carriage and struck him with a cane.

With the attacker in the driver's seat, the horse ran to its barn. A worker said Medina got off and struck and kicked the horse. Two military men who picked up Turner subdued the suspect until police arrived.
