Man Arrested For Child Sex Crimes

Wichita police are investigating two separate child abuse cases, one involving child sex crimes.

Officers arrested a 37-year-old man Tuesday at a home on South Everett. Police responded to a call after a 16-year-old girl said the man had been sexually abusing her since she was 8 years old.

The teenager said the man had been taking explicit sexual photos of her and forced her to have sex. Investigators said the man and the victim were related, but did not say how.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility facing at least seven counts of child sex crimes.

There are often a number of reasons why a child may not disclose that he/she has been a victim of sexual abuse, said Kathy Williams, Executive Director of the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.

"They may have been convinced that this is normal behavior or that someone is introducing them into something that is normal," Williams said. "There could be fear used in terms of the offender or abuser saying to the child 'If you tell anyone, I'm going to hurt or kill your mother,' or another family member or their dog."

Lt. Jeff Weible, Wichita Police, said the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit is also assisting Dodge City authorities with a separate child abuse case.

The Dodge City Police Department said a 9-month-old baby was transported to a Wichita hospital with bleeding on the brain. The child remains in critical condition.

Authorities arrested the child's father, Jonathan Villa-Ramirez, 24, on child abuse charges.
