Peru Court: Dutchman's Extradition After Sentence

Monday, June 4, 2012

Joran van der Sloot's lawyer says Peru's Supreme Court has approved the confessed murderer's extradition to the United States, but only once he has served out his 28-year prison sentence in the South American nation.

Lawyer Maximo Altez says the court's Friday decision is not final. Peru's justice minister and Cabinet must endorse it.

Van der Sloot faces extortion charges in Alabama in connection with the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba exactly five years before he killed a Peruvian college student in Lima.

The Dutchman remains the prime suspect in the Holloway disappearance and the U.S. charges stem from his alleged acceptance of $25,000 in early 2010 in exchange for an unfulfilled promise to lead her mother's lawyer to the body.
