Star Wars Exhibit Opens This Weekend At Exploration Place

Friday, May 25, 2012

Friday marks 35 years since the movie phenomenon Star Wars opened in theaters. Fittingly, this anniversary is the opening weekend for the exhibit Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination at Wichita's Exploration Place.

Huge crowds are expected for what could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get up close to the props, models and costumes from that galaxy far, far away. Exploration Place President Jan Luth says the traveling exhibit, which was created by the Museum of Science in Boston in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd., with support from the National Science Foundation, is out of this world.

"This is a science exhibit. The exhibit is organized into four different themes and you explore Star Wars science and real science around those themes," said Luth.

The hands-on exhibit lets visitors make their own planets and robots and also ride in a hovercraft. It includes props and costumes from all six Star Wars films.

"If you've seen the movie, just seeing some of the things they use in the movie and some of the ways they used them is pretty spectacular," said visitor Ryan Jantz.

Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination officially opens Saturday and will stay at Exploration Place through Sept. 3.
