Federal Disaster Funds Approved For April Tornado Outbreak

Kansas counties affected by last month's severe storms will receive federal funds as recovery efforts continue.

A massive storm system brought tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding April 14. Dozens of homes and businesses were damaged during the severe weather event.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Thursday that federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms.

Counties affected are: Edwards, Ellsworth, Harper, Hodgeman, Jewell, Kiowa, Mitchell, Osborne, Rice, Rush, Russell, Sedgwick, Stafford, and Sumner.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Stephen R. Thompson said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
